about

Cestine is the drone/ambient duo of Theodore Schafer and Dominic Coppola. For as long as I have known them they have worked as a partnership, first starting in a silly emo pop band led by their high school friends, then branching out into their own more comforting territory and starting a two piece noise rock instrumental band. That band evolved, it's name changed, it's genre changed, the attitude changed but it's core stayed the same. When that band was put to an end I was sad to see it go, but as always the two picked it right up again and started Cestine. Combining both of their influences into a well developed textural mechanism.

With Cestine, Dominic Coppola's guitar element was taken and washed over the neo-classical, ambient layers that were created by Theodore. With each Cestine release, the two perfected the sound and got closer to the romantic idea of the guitar. On "Rugosa" you can really see how they have developed since their first release "Pressed". The opening "Rugosa I" starts with a tape deck like washed guitar stretched to the point of splitting, creating their most romantic tone.

This is the last release by Cestine and should serve as a testament to the sound that they created. The last piece on the tape is a great way to leave the band. "Rugosa IV" sounds like a train passing by but never seems to pass, once it does pass the relief feels like home and you are left with a euphoric feeling. The release of this tape isn't just symbolizing the end of band but the end of an era as well.

Cestine has had releases through Twice Removed and Rok Lok Records.
